A square made with pressed earth in Madrid

The Plaza de la Paja was one of Madrid’s major marketplaces in mediaeval times. Today, it is a small urban park with an irregular shape, delimited on its four sides by ancient buildings and gently sloping down from the north side towards the former Arroyo San Pedro (Today Calle Segovia).

It is made of grey granite and  compressed earth, with varous trees and no additional ornamental objects, apart from a bronze statue representing a man reading a newspaper, sitting on a bench.

Compressed earth used as pavement helps mantaining low temperatures in hot season; it contributes to maintain the park natural features and historical character; finally, it is comfortable for walking and brings us back to our natural origins.
